We got Gavin's preschool portfolio and this painting cracked me up! For some reason my kids thought Obama was a superhero (like Spiderman or Batman). I think they saw some parody at a friends house that showed him in a cape or something to that effect. At any rate... they thought it was real and whenever they would play "superheros" they would say, "I get to be Barack Obama!" Then they would proceed to run around the house singing, "Barack Obama, he's come to save the day." So, here is one of Gavin's paintings showing Obama fighting "Spider Duck" (whoever that is??)!!!

Gavin had an amazing preschool teacher this year.... Mrs. Low. She worked so hard all hear to help Gavin prepare for Kindergarten. She was creative, patient, flexible, compassionate and firm. We could not be happier with the results. Gavin is now reading, doing basic math, has better focus and he enjoys school. Thank you Mrs. Low for a great year. Gavin was blessed to be in your class and he will carry the skills you taught him through his lifetime.

We are proud of our little man and are excited for the next chapter!

Kendall decided she wanted to start climbing out of her crib..... and destroyed her room a couple of times. Then she would fall asleep on the floor. Good times!

Magic Laundry!

How does laundry always seem to reappear? Like a magic trick you really could have done without. Franklin has been pitching in a lot with all the folding and putting away (not sure why the builder of our home put all the bedrooms upstairs and the laundry room downstairs). Okay... stop complaining... I do remember our apartment days when we had to lug all the dirty clothes to a laundry room. I also realize that we could be washing our clothes in a river and hanging them to dry. Anyway, back to the picture.... Franklin spent about an hour one night folding all of our laundry and putting it away (thanks, hun!). Unbeknownst to him, there was a load in the washer and another in the dryer. So I texted him this picture the morning after his folding spree. Titled: "Why I hate laundry!"

We went on a spur of the moment day trip to Disneyland in January. My mom came for the weekend and offered for Franklin and I to get
away for a couple of nights. We decided it would be fun to take just the boys to Disneyland. I know these pictures are a little pathetic, but they are the only ones we have. We didn't bring ANY gear at all. So, no stroller, no backpacks, no food, no camera (Gavin did wear his cape all day though). It was wonderful to just focus on the boys and enjoy them as they experienced Disneyland. They are both past the napping stage and went all day with no problem. I think we were ready to rest before they were! It is a fun memory that will be forever etched in our minds.... but here are the few pictures we have from our phones.

Things change so much in one year when you have little ones. We watched Kendall grow from an infant to a toddler. Parker has no traces of toddler hood left in him and Gavin constantly amazes us with all of his knowledge (reading, current events, political issues, etc.) In just 12 months we see so much change and growth before our eyes. Although there are days when Franklin and I wish we could sleep in a little longer, have just one uninterrupted conversation, or do something spontaneously without packing half our house.... these kids are such a joy and we felt so very blessed by them in 2010.

Here is our pathetic attempt at a family photo. It's a self portrait using the camera timer. We only took two shots and everyone was done cooperating. We learned after the fact that Gavin decided he would pose like "Sly Fox" (the video game)!

What?!?!?! One Ordinary Friday afternoon, I was organizing our garage (hanging up bike racks to be exact) and the next thing I know Franklin pulls up in the driveway. Wow, how sweet honey, you're taking me on a surprise date! Thinking maybe we're on our way to Riverpark to window shop and have dinner, I was excited by the thoughtful gesture just days before my birthday. To my surprise, the plans were much more planned, elaborate and involved than I could have imagined. Franklin laughed as he enjoyed every last bit of my suspense filled interrogations as to why we were headed up highway 99.

Once I knew our kids were being cared for by his mom, I was able to relax a bit. It was beyond crazy to have no idea at all what we were doing. We stopped in Sacramento to "go to the bathroom" and we were met by our good Friends jay and Rebecca (who have four kids)!! Unbelievable! Rebecca masterminded this entire plan (months in advance) for a couples weekend away to Napa in honor of my birthday. I have never been so surprised in my entire life!

And to sweeten the surprise even more... our good friends Jon and Carrie met us in Napa for dinner!

We spent Thanksgiving at Franklin's parents house... it was a low key day and the boys made name cards. Doing a craft with them always sounds like a great idea in theory... but usually goes a little different than expected.

After Gavin made his name card (which was mostly made by grandma)... he informed us that he wanted it to be called "electric eel" rather than "Gavin."

Oh, and yes.... they are STILL wearing their Halloween costumes!

Family photos are always an interesting event! It's a feat in and of itself to have all of us dressed and groomed at once.... let alone getting any of our kids to sit still (or better yet, look at the camera or anywhere in that direction)! What a treat! I got to get away with some great friends with NO KIDS!!! I realized that this was my first time since having Gavin over 5 years ago that I have ever done a girls weekend! It was perfect.... from sleeping until my eyes opened on their own, the great weather, Peets Coffee in the morning, pedicures, sitting at lunch for hours on a garden patio, wine tasting in Napa, the best red velvet cupcake I've ever had at Dean & Deluca, having great conversation over dinner without having to bribe... threaten... wrangle... feed or clean up another person, and a refreshed and renewed mommy to come home to her little people!

Thanks Anne for offering up your home to us!!! What a great memory!

It seems like this year has gone by in a blink. Kendall has been such a joy in our lives. We have soaked up every last bit of her cute baby ways. She is a cuddly girl who can also be a brute. She loves to watch her brothers play and tries to run in the pack once in a while. They are gentle and kind to Kendall, often looking out for her so she doesn't get hurt when she tries to play with them.
Kendall smiles and laughs easily. She loves to lay her head on mama's shoulder and give a big squeeze. She melts me. I know that in the coming months she will start to form words and her personality will emerge. At the same time, her little chubby thighs will start to thin out and her sweet cheeks will become more toddler like.

I wanted to do a cupcake theme for Kendall's first birthday. I found a cute over sized cupcake pan and made her a fun pink cupcake. We dressed her up and put the cake in front of her.... and she SCREAMED! She did not like her cake at all! I tried on several other days to get some photos of Kendall with her cake and she wanted nothing to do with it. I think she was scared of the big pink cupcake! Later, I gave her a reqular cupcake. She was a little more interested in it, but was still a bit unsure about the whole thing.

ANY time Kendall sees the back door open, she makes a run for it! She loves being in the back yard and thinks she can do everything the boys can.

When Kendall gets outside, she immediately scales the play structure and goes down the slide. Then, she runs with glee as she desperately tries to get away from me- in order to avoid being limited in any way. Of course, she almost always has a fit when she has to go back in the house!

Kendall is walking all over the place and looks like a drunken' hippo. Her chubby little legs are so cute as they wobble back and forth. She is saying a few words, but mostly babbles and grunts to let us know that she's thinking.

We went back and forth several times when deciding if we should send Gavin to Kindergarten this year. He is a smart boy who makes friends easily. We wanted him to be on the older end, but when we consulted teachers, we were encouraged that he was ready to go. After briefly testing the waters and talking to many parents in our area, we quickly realized how intense our schools are and how much better boys tend to do when they are on the older end. At this point, Gavin is much more interested in recess. Kindergarten is serious business these days!

As soon as we decided to give Gavin another year, we felt instant relief! It's nice to have a little more time before all the pressure is on! Gavin adjusts so easily to change - he is happy to be in pre-K. He bases his opinion on how big the playground is.

It seems like Parker has been three for a long time. Keeping up with his big brother is a lot of work... but Parker is determined! Of course, Parker insisted on having a Star Wars birthday.

We were so lucky to spend Parker's birthday with "the cousins." It is so fun to watch Parker's excitement over the everything..... even the little stuff can cause him to burst out with joy!

Parker often says, "Mom, I love you always and forever!." Happy birthday little buddy, we love you too!

In preparation for kindergarten, Gavin had to get FIVE shots, or as he calls them "pokes." We have learned that offering a little reward after the shots makes them much less traumatic (something a little more than a sucker). I think five shots just might put me over the edge! Gavin bravely held out his arms and took all of his pokes.... big boy!

The 4th of July is one of our favorite holidays. What is better than enjoying a summer day with family and friends? This is our second summer in this house and we love the neighborhood activities. The kids do a bike parade.... then the water fight begins.

We had over 1,100 water balloons this year and our secret weapon.... a huge water blaster made by Martin Ford!

At dusk, we did a Piccolo Pete car race and some fireworks. Great day!

A decade!

When we were registering for our wedding gifts, the lady at Macy's was trying to talk us into upgrading our pots and pans by telling us the ones we chose would last no more than 5 to 10 years. I was interested in the upgrade, but Franklin insisted that after 10 years of use, we would simply buy a new set. Well, I don't think either of us expected 10 years to pass this quickly!! And.... the lady at Macy's was wrong! Our pots still have a little more life in them.

So, 3 kids later..... we are onto the next decade. Happy anniversary!

There is something that feels different when your child turns five. It is more clear than ever that he has crossed over from toddlerhood to KID land. Yes, our first baby is now a little boy. And what a delightful one at that.

Gavin is our gentle spirit. He has a kind heart and is easy to get along with. We have treasured every day we have had with this little guy (energy and all). What a great big brother he has become. We look forward to watching his character develop as he ventures out into the world (not too far, please?). I know we are going to blink and I will be blogging about his 10th, 16th and 18th birthdays. For now.... I am going to enjoy number FIVE. We had a great day celebrating your birth Gavin!

9 month sweetness!

Yes.... Kendall is 9 months old. Each month feels faster than the last and I can hardly keep up with this little thing. She is as sweet as ever!

Legoland!

What a perfect vacation with little ones!! To say the kids had a blast would be an understatement! I was worried about the long drive. We were lucky to be able to stop in Irvine for two nights to visit our friends Jon and Katie. We were able to re-connect with several friends we hadn't seen in over two years.

We also stopped at Downtown Disney and checked out the Lego store... and ate some yummy treats!

Our hotel was perfect for kids (Grand Pacific Palisades). It was right across from Legoland, and the pool was like a small water park.

We got to visit with the Barley family too!

We learned that both Gavin and Parker LOVE roller coasters!

Kendall did good, but it was hard for her to be in her stroller all day. This girl likes to move!

Last day of pre-school!

Gavin had a great year at pre-school! He developed and changed more than we could have imagined. It's obvious that Gavin is well-liked by both teachers and peers. He blossomed in the classroom setting and it was fun to watch him learn new things every week. He is now writing his name (so cute) and telling us lots of fun facts about the world around him. What a fun year we had!

Someone recently asked me if we ever call Kendall by her name.... we often do, but we also like to call her:

She is a busy girl these days.... exploring the house and cruising around on furniture. She is still as happy as can be, unless you mess around with her food. If the spoon moves too slowly, or there is a pause in the feeding for ANY REASON, watch out! She will cry like someone cut off a finger. Kendall loves any and all food that comes near her and if she sees mama munchin' on something from across the room she makes a mad dash in that direction.

Kendall no longer likes to sit while mama takes her pictures... she was moving and grabbing the camera the entire time these pictures were snapped. Then, the camera decided to take it's last picture, so we are on hold for a bit until we get a new one. Don't be surprised if I have to pull this cute little outfit out again for another day.... it's too cute!

When we potty trained Gavin.... he was not too thrilled at first. We came short of offering him a new car in order to bribe our way out of diaper-ville. Once all the dust settled, we found ourselves unbelievably excited for the achievement, and having to make good on all our promises.

Needless to say, I wasn't jumping at the chance to start on round two of potty training. I told myself I was waiting for nice weather to motivate me to even attempt the job (still having nightmares from Gavin pooping outside then riding his bike - not even mildly inconvenienced).

So... on one sunny day, I thought I would let Parker wear "undies" as he played outside. I explained to him that diapers were for babies and that he is a big boy now. I loaded him with liquids and let him try out the potty. To my complete amazement.... he was telling me he had to go within a couple hours and accident free. What? That's it? Yes, that was it. He didn't want to wear a diaper that night to bed and woke up dry the next morning.

In celebration, Parker got to take a trip to Target where he picked out some "Iron Man" undies, a new toy, and a chocolate cake.

Good job little buddy, and thanks for going so easy on mom!

Gavin continues to pave the way as our oldest child. He is still an active little boy with a love for climbing and hanging. Gavin is extremely agile and I am often stopped by other mom's who are alarmed by what Gavin is doing (hanging off a play structure or climbing something very tall). I usually just shrug....

At almost 5, Gavin still loves super heros. He likes to battle with light sabers and play anything Star Wars. In the past six months, he has also become interested in Lego's (which by the way are pretty pricey little pieces of plastic).

Although Gavin is an active boy, he is a gentle spirit. He is easy going and easy to please. Gavin is kind hearted and likes to do the right thing. When I see him at school, I can tell he is well liked by all his classmates and his teachers. It is really a joy to parent him.

Yesterday, we were driving in the car and we passed a cemetary. Gavin said, "All those people went to Heaven.... but, they forgot to take their flowers."

Recently, Parker decided he would start referring to himself in the third person, as if there is another "Parker" in the room. We often hear, "Parker do it all by Parker's self!" And, he does. It seems there isn't much this little guy can't do. From spouting out the alphabet he saw written down at 16 months, to riding a "big boy bike" at 18 months, to dribbling a basketball, hitting a baseball, or swinging himself on the swing ("all by Parker's self").... this kid is determined!

Every day, Parker insists on getting himself dressed, opening his own doors, buckling his own car seat, etc. When he asks for water, we hear "Parkerwantswaterwithoutalid" in a streamlined sentence that declares he will no longer be using a sippy cup.

Parker has talked about his birthday (which isn't until the end of August) for the past six months and insists he wants a "Lego Star Wars the Clone Wars" party. Funny, Gavin didn't even know about Star Wars, or even Lego's for that matter when he was two and a half. Gavin's third birthday was Thomas the Train. I guess things are a little different when you have a big brother showing you the ropes.

Parker is full of life, laughter, emotion and determination. Like his big brother, he is covered in bruises and can't get enough rough play.

Parker is a sweetie with his baby sister. He doesn't address her often, but when he does, he uses a soft baby voice and tells us, "She likes me!"

Seven months.

To say this is all going too quickly is an understatement! It's hard to believe Little Lady is already seven months old. She is now older than Parker was when we moved to Fresno. I know I am going to blink and she won't be a baby anymore. It doesn't help matters that she is already an advanced crawler, pulling up on things and trying to stand. She is still a delight in every way. She LOVES food and is very aware when we are eating. I have been making all of her baby food and she can't get enough. I will say it has become significantly more difficult to take pictures of this little one. The minute I set her down she is crawling toward the camera. Hopefully I can still get some good ones out of her because these girl bows are too much fun!

Kendall had her first solid food today.... MmmMmmMmm.... rice cereal. She ate it like a champ and it was clear she was more than ready to take on solid foods! Click here to see a little video of the big event.

Half a year old!

It's hard to believe, but Little Lady (as we affectionately call her) is half a year old. It is all going by so quickly, and we are enjoying every minut

e of this sweet baby girl. She is a pleasant little thing and we still can't get enough of her. Kendall is weighing in at 16lbs. 7oz. and she is 26 inches long. She is up on all fours and rocking. She looks like two teeth are trying to break through and we can tell by the look in her eye she is ready to start solid foods.

Kendall still has very blue eyes! She loves her mama and tracks her around the house when she isn't hanging out on her hip. Kendall loves to go to bed early, but still isn't sleeping through the night (she usually wakes 1-2 times to eat). It has been a fun 6 months for sure!

Gavin is loving school. He has lots of friends and likes his teachers (I often see him holding hands or sitting on the lap of one specific teacher when I am there). He was excited about his party and explained to me that Jesus died and when they went to look in the "toon" he wasn't there. He equates Jesus to a super hero who has the most amazing powers.

Franklin finished his first century this past weekend. He rode 100 miles in about 7 hours! He was able to do the ride with his good friend from San Diego Will. They are both training for the Kaiser ride in June.

Sometimes when the boys say funny things, I think to myself that I need to write it down so I don't forget it. Here are a few funnies from this past week:

Parker came up to me pulling up his sleeve and shouting, "Mom guess what, I have a bluuueee spider web on my arm!" He was so excited I couldn't bare to tell him it's just his veins.

Parker: Look mom, I found a worm!
Me: Ohhhh, yes you did - but it's dead. It looks like it got dried up from the sun.
Gavin: Is it gonna come back to life?
Me: No honey, when things die they don't come back to life.
Gavin: Oh.
Parker: Yeah, it needs new batteries.

Last night Gavin asked us why we can't smell and talk at the same time?? Uhhhh, never thought of that one!

Franklin has been riding a lot lately. He often rides to and from work. This weekend he is in Solvang doing the century ride..... GOOD LUCK!!!
